World War I (1914-1918)
Vitold Kowalewski was born in Poland on June 15, 1893. On November 29, 1913, he arrived in the United States aboard the ship Baltic. He eventually settled in Schenectady, where he married Helen Eberhardt on October 13, 1917.
On January 17, 1917, Vitold enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Slocum in New York. On June 14, 1918, he was sent overseas aboard the U.S. Army troopship RMS Olympic. He served as a cook for Company G, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. On July 15, 1918, Vitold was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial in France.
