Joseph Robert Leonardo was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 25, 1918. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, graduated from Nott Terrace High School, and participated in baseball and basketball at the local Y.M.C.A. Joseph attended the New York State Merchant Marine Academy, where he also played baseball and basketball.
Joseph enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and attended the advanced flying school at Moody Field in Valdosta, Georgia. On June 22, 1943, a primary training plane collided with a twin engine advanced trainer, killing Joseph. He is buried in Sts. Cyril and Method Cemetery in Rotterdam, New York.
