John Victor Malik was born in Schenectady, New York, on June 27, 1917. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1936, and started working for the American Locomotive Company before entering the military.
In October 1944, John enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort McClellan in Alabama. He was a sergeant serving with the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On June 23, 1944, during the Battle of Saipan, John went missing in action. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing in Honolulu, Hawaii.
