Howard S. Nichols, the son of William and Effa (Brown) Nichols, was born on October 21, 1897, in Elmira, New York. He relocated to Schenectady with his mother and stepfather after the death of his father. Howard worked for the trolley.
On April 24, 1914, Howard enlisted in the United States Army and began his training at Fort Slocum in New York. He held the rank of Private and was the Bugler of Company A, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. On July 18, 1918, near Chateau Thierry, France, Howard died in the line of duty. He is buried in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery, Schoharie County.
