Born in Schenectady, New York, in March 1915, Robert Francis Patten was the son of William and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Patten. He was born on March 2, according to the New York State Birth Index, while his WWII Draft Card states March 7. After graduating from Cornell University and Mont Pleasant High School , he worked for the General Ice Cream Corporation.

In June 1942, Robert enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with the 11th Airborne Division. On February 7, 1945, during the Battle of Luzon, Robert was killed in combat. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.
