World War II (1939-1945)

James Robert Manning was born in Green Island, New York, on November 1, 1919. By 1920, he was living in the city of Schenectady with his family. In 1938, he graduated from Nott Terrace High School, and after graduation, he worked for General Electric.

In 1940, James enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed his training in Newport, Rhode Island. On November 16, 1943, the submarine Corvina was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-176 south of Truk Island, Western Pacific; 82 crew members died as a result, including James. He is remembered at the Honolulu Memorial, Courts of the Missing in Honolulu, Hawaii.
