World War II (1939-1945)

Richard Frederick Callahan was born in Niskayuna, New York, on October 8, 1924. He grew up on Palmer Street in Schenectady County and was a student at Nott Terrace High School, where he played football and was a well-known speed skater.

Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was a private first class serving with Battery L, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division. On February 9, 1945, Richard was lost overboard from the U.S.S. Henry while en route to Iwo Jima. He is remembered at the Honolulu Memorial, Courts of the Missing in Hawaii.
