World War I (1914-1918)

Hugh Rufus Merwin was born in Rock Rift, Delaware County, New York, on February 7, 1895. He was living in the city of Schenectady and working as a stock clerk when he registered for the World War I draft.

On September 20, 1917, Hugh enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Devens in Massachusetts. He was a corporal serving with Headquarters Company, 163rd Infantry Regiment. Hugh died on December 16, 1918, from spinal meningitis. He is buried in the Walton Cemetery in Delaware County, New York.
