Herman Gordon Deicke was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, on June 17, 1894. By 1900, he was living in the city of Schenectady with his family. Before joining the military, he worked in the shipping department of General Electric.
On December 5, 1917, Herman enlisted in the United States Army. From December 1917 to April 1918, he underwent his training at Camp Upton in New York before being transported overseas. He was a private first class serving with the 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division. Herman was killed on October 17, 1918, while carrying a wounded soldier from the battlefield during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in St. Luke's Cemetery in Dutchess County.
