Anthony Encinas was born in Schenectady, New York, on April 14, 1922. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and was a student at Nott Terrace High School. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.
Anthony enlisted in the US Navy and was a seaman first class. On June 10, 1943, he was on board the American Turbine Tanker ESSO Gettysburg when it was torpedoed twice by a U-66 (Friedrich Markworth) submarine. One hundred miles Southeast of Savannah, Georgia, the ESSO Gettysburg sank. 15 crew members made it out alive while 57 perished. Anthony is remembered on the East Coast Memorial in Manhattan, New York.
