Anthony Dominick Vano was born in Schenectady, New York, on March 2, 1923. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy on January 14, 1940. Anthony attended the fleet radio school in San Diego, California, and the aviation radio school in Seattle, Washington. He was stationed in Alaska during part of World War II.
In 1951, during the Korean War, Anthony was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Washington State. He was a petty officer first class serving with Patrol Squadron 9. On June 21, 1951, Anthony was with a crew of ten on a four-engine Navy Privateer when it crash-landed in the shallow waters of Skagit Bay, 50 miles north of Seattle. Five crew members were killed and five survived. He is buried in the Evergreen Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, Washington.
