Gordon S. Riddell was born in Scotia, New York, on March 28, 1921. He is listed as a resident of Schenectady, New York, on the 1930 census, but in 1940 and 1950, he is listed as a resident of Glenville, New York, in Schenectady County. He began working for General Electric after graduating from Scotia-Glenville High School.

Gordon served as a pilot in the China-Burma-India Theater for more than 100 missions during World War II. After World War II ended, he enlisted in the New York Air National Guard. He was a first lieutenant serving with the 139th Fighter Squadron. On October 19, 1952, he was piloting an F-51 Mustang when it went down and exploded in Herkimer County, New York. He is buried in Park Cemetery in Scotia, New York.
