About

World War II (1939-1945)

Herbert Arthur Lewis was born in Colonie, Albany County, New York, on May 5, 1919. He grew up on Stop 10, Albany-Schenectady Road; graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in 1936; and was enrolled at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance before entering the military.

Herbert enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, and at Arizona's Kingman Army Airfield, he was an aviation cadet. On January 6, 1944, right outside the main entrance of the airbase, Herbert was killed when a transcontinental fast freight collided with his army bus that was crammed with air cadets; twenty-five cadets were killed and eight injured. He is buried in Evergreen Memorial Park in Colonie, New York.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

For the Fallen
